Representative Emmer Withdraws as Speaker Candidate

He would have fallen short of the necessary votes.

After a number of secret ballots in a closed-door session on Tuesday, Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the House Minority Whip, was selected to run for Speaker of the House. However, after a roll call vote showed that he would not attain a sufficient number of votes, Congressman Emmer decided to drop out of the race.

He is the third candidate who would fail to secure the necessary 217 votes of members of the House, after Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan.

Representatives Mike Johnson of Louisiana, Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, and Byron Donalds of Florida have returned as potential candidates for the speakership.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of the House majority as they deliberate over whom to support for the speaker position.
  • For wisdom for representatives who are candidates for the speakership.
  • For God to accomplish His purposes in and through the U.S. government.
